Dance for the Sun, 2006

Kira originally created “Dance for the Sun” to use in her kids’ yoga classes, but the CD has since found a devoted following above and

beyond its connection to yoga. It has won six music-industry awards–including a prestigious Parents’ Choice Award and the Independent Music Award for Best Children’s Album–and kids and parents alike can be found listening to “Dance for the Sun” at home, in the car, and at school, even when they’re nowhere near a yoga mat.

When Kira’s song “Colors” was chosen for Dell’s laptop ad campaign in 2008, its worldwide exposure brought Kira’s music to people around the globe. Yoga instructors, schoolteachers, and parents have all discovered the magic that Kira’s songs work with children, whether they’re doing the yoga poses, calming down with the slower songs, or grooving to upbeat tunes like “Caterpillar Caterpillar” (which won the Independent Music Award for Best Children’s Song).

But “Dance for the Sun” is not only a collection of hip family tunes–ranging in style from folky guitar songs to jazzy numbers and traditional African melodies–but also an easy, fun way to get kids moving and improve their health and self-esteem. For a fun, low-key yoga practice that your kids will love, you can listen to the CD’s Bonus Yoga Tracks and use the beautifully illustrated booklet. The instructions are clear and fun, and the poses and movements simple–no yoga experience necessary!
